Dr. Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin in 1928 revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections. He accidentally discovered that one of the dishes in which he was culturing the bacteria had become moldy and the bacteria in it had died.

Further research revealed that a compound from the fungus proved to be toxic to these bacteria.

He named this substance Penicillin after the name of this fungus. Later such drugs were classified as antibiotics.

This discovery proved to be a miracle drug in preventing bacterial infections, especially from rotting wounds during war. Since then, hundreds of antibiotics have been developed.

“Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics only when you need them,” advises Dr Tariq. If you have been prescribed antibiotics for eg a kidney infection or pneumonia, please use them as directed.’
