Apple has released a new iPhone iOS 17.3 update, in which dangerous types of theft have been broken.
There have been reports in recent months that thieves see people entering iPhone passcodes and then stealing their phones.
These passcodes give a lot of access inside the phone — including changing passwords on its owner’s iCloud account.
Once done, the hacker has access to the entire digital life of the iPhone owner, including seeing any other passwords and being able to use their payments.
Since the password is changed, there is no way for the iPhone owner to get these accounts or their phones back.
However, Now Apple has introduced a new feature called ‘Stolon Device Protection’. The goal is to prevent the use of this attack by making it difficult for thieves to use passcodes to capture people’s digital lives.
For this, people need to use a Face ID or Touch ID to make some changes to the phone, such as viewing a password or credit card.
In an effort to ensure that it is unlocked only by the actual person, it cannot be unlocked in any other way, as not with a passcode or even a phone password.
Other actions include even more security. For example, to change the password on the owner’s Apple ID, users will have to wait an extra hour and verify their face again.
The purpose of this security delay is to give people enough time to mark their device as lost and secure their account.
People whose phones have been stolen will apparently not be able to access ‘Find My’. But this can be done from another device that is logged in, or through someone else’s phone.
Those features won’t be enabled if the phone is at a known location – such as a person’s home or workplace. Users can only use their passcode as usual.
The feature will have to be turned on automatically. To do this, go to Settings, select Face ID and Passcode, and then turn the feature on or off.
For this to work, it is also necessary to turn on some settings, such as the Location Services option to track important locations. Apple suggests that when the phone is sold or given, it should also be turned off.
iOS 17.3 also has many other features, including shared Apple Music playlists, and the option to offer AirPlay for hotels. It can be downloaded from the Settings app.
