Actress Priyanka Chopra Jones has said that for the first time in her 22-year career, she has been paid the same amount as her male costar.
She is a successful Indian actress who has acted in more than 60 Bollywood films. He worked for Hollywood a decade ago. So far, many Indian actors have made successful careers in the American entertainment industry.
He says that I have never been paid as much as a male actor in Bollywood. “I was paid only 10 percent of my male costars.”
She says that there is a clear difference between the earnings of female actors and male actors. “Many women are still affected by it.”
Priyanka Chopra says that other actresses of my generation have also demanded equal pay. We have raised questions about it but we could not get parity.
She has been named in the BBC’s 100 Most Influential Women in 2022 list. She says that as a young actress in the Indian film industry, she accepted patriarchy as ‘normal’.
“I used to sit on the sets for hours and that was fine with me, while the male co-actors took their time, came to the sets on their own accord and decided when the shooting could start.”
Priyanka said that for the first time in her 22-year career, she has been paid at par with men, which has never happened to her in Bollywood.
He says that at the beginning of his career, he was body-shamed because of his complexion. “I was called the black cat and Sanoli.” What is meant by Sanoli in a country where we are all wheatish in color?
I used to think that maybe I am not that beautiful. I believed that I had to work harder, even though I thought I was a little more talented than my fair-skinned co-stars, but I believed it to be true because the perception was so common.”
“Obviously it comes from our colonial history,” Priyanka said. It’s not even 100 years since the end of the British rule, but we are still attached to this concept.
“But our generation will have to break such ties so that the next generation cannot adopt the idea of preferring fair complexion.”
When he was asked about the situation regarding pay equality in Hollywood, he said, “It happened to me for the first time in Hollywood.” So I don’t know if this will continue to happen in the future.
‘Because this is the first show in which a male actor Meera is the lead.’
Although she has millions of fans in South Asia, Priyanka had to work hard for a decade to establish herself abroad.
“I used to do the meetings myself, introduce myself and take my show reel with me,” she says. I worked with acting coaches and dialect coaches.
I gave auditions, I was also rejected. She used to cry and then go again for the next audition. I worked hard to succeed in a new industry. This experience is a source of pride for me.
In 2015, Priyanka Chopra became the first South Asian actress to play the lead role in an American TV show. It was his thriller series ‘Quantico’. She also became the first Indian face to appear on the cover of several leading global fashion magazines.
But she says that despite awareness of creating a diverse environment, people of her generation still struggle to find mainstream work in Hollywood.
“I think maybe I’ve built up some reputation and I’m doing interesting work. We have to see if it is recognized or not. Being South Asian or Indian in Hollywood is very difficult. We still have to go through many steps.
Priyanka is of course a world-renowned personality who continues to raise her voice for women’s rights at international events.
He is also criticized for not raising his voice on India’s local issues. When he was questioned about the criticism, his publicist intervened and prevented him from responding.
Earlier, responding to a question about positive and negative attention on social media, he said, “There are always people who say, ‘You haven’t said anything about anything.’
‘Or you should have said something about it.’ It’s like you can’t always please everyone.’
Priyanka Chopra spoke to the BBC’s 100 Women list team in Lucknow, where she serves as UNICEF’s global ‘Goodwill’ ambassador. Here he visited health centers and schools and met young students.
She has been working with UNICEF for the past 15 years and has visited Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Jordan, Bangladesh and other countries besides India. She visits children affected by conflicts and natural disasters.
“When you’re a public figure, people are interested in where you are and where you’re going,” she says. I feel that I achieve my goal in this.
“If I get a platform where I can talk about these activities and the problems children are facing and how they can deal with it. Maybe people who see me like this will also see this message.
“So I amplify people’s voices, especially children’s voices, whose voices don’t carry very far.” This is the best job of my life.
