During pregnancy, most women complain of morning sickness, ie early morning nausea and vomiting, but now scientists say that they have learned the reason why some women experience severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
It is common for women to experience these symptoms during the first trimester or first three months of pregnancy, but in some women these symptoms become dangerous when they develop into hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Pregnant women not only have nausea and vomiting when they wake up in the morning, but when it becomes severe, they may face dehydration, weakness, mental stress, vitamin deficiency and other problems. .
Now, with the help of a new research, scientists have been able to find out that the cause of this condition is a hormone called GDF15.
This hormone acts on a very small part of the brain and signals the nausea and discomfort that causes vomiting in women. Pregnant women who are hypersensitive to GDF15 may experience nausea and vomiting up to 50 times a day.
It is very important to mention here that women who naturally have low levels of this hormone before pregnancy are more likely to be affected by the increase in GDF15 hormone during the first trimester of pregnancy. .
Experts also say that the relationship between a woman’s illness during pregnancy and the GDF15 hormone is significant, according to research, the mother’s illness is due to the low amount of the hormone produced by the uterus. Chances are low.
“The more sensitive the mother is to this hormone, the more sick she can be,” says Professor Stephen O’Rahilly of Cambridge University in England.
“Knowing this gives us a clue as to how we can prevent this from happening,” he said.
One in 100, or occasionally three, pregnant women are thought to be affected by HG, a disease that can threaten the life of the fetus. Many women who suffer from this are in desperate need of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Weakness and inability
Susie Wirral, 35, says her experience of being infected with HG during her pregnancy was so painful that she was forced to consider abortion.
Viral is a mother of three children. She was HG affected during two of her three pregnancies and as she has set her example in front of everyone, many women suffering from this disease approach her daily and seek help.
He said that I felt a failure in my existence, I could not live with my family. I considered not continuing with my pregnancy because it was scary, it’s very common when you have Hg.’
“I couldn’t breathe without gagging or vomiting and I was locked in my room for five months before both babies were born,” Wirral said. You have to limit your world a lot to survive, my husband took care of me, took care of me a lot and supported me.’
“It affects everything and you go through it every day before the baby is born,” she says.
Procedures
Although we were able to find out from earlier clinical research that this condition or disease during pregnancy can be linked to GDF15, it is now known that we still do not know much about it. They were not familiar with these things.
Scientists from the University of Cambridge, Scotland, the United States and Sri Lanka participated in this new study, published in the journal Nature, which found that a woman’s illness during pregnancy is related to the amount of hormones produced in the uterus. , the more hormones produced, the more symptoms of the disease will appear.
In the research, they studied women at the Rosy Maternity Hospital in Cambridge and found that women with a genetic variant that is at high risk for Hg had lower levels of the hormone, while women with the blood disorder beta-thalassemia who had pre-pregnancy Because of the high levels of GDF-15, they have low levels of the hormone. They experienced very little nausea or vomiting.
Blocking the hormone from reaching its highly specific receptor in the mother’s brain will ultimately form the basis of an effective and safe way to treat the disorder, explained Professor O’Rahelly, director of the Metabolic Diseases Unit at the University of Cambridge Medical Research Council.
An overlooked problem
Vivian Kumar, a mother of two, used to have 10 episodes an hour during pregnancy and she didn’t just vomit in her sleep.
He said that it is not just morning sickness but it is a condition. Once you go through it you never recover, it stays with you forever.’
“I felt really cut off from the world and felt like I was in a place where there was no one but me. It was very difficult to get out of the house,” she says.
Vivian Kumar says, “I was lucky enough to have the support of my husband and mother, otherwise I would not have had the courage to move forward without them. If I am with my children today, it is only because of my mother and my husband.
When she became pregnant for the third time, she was hospitalized for eight days and the baby died.
“I was on a lot of different medications, I was given steroids that didn’t work and unfortunately the baby didn’t survive,” she added.
Charlotte Howden, chief executive of Pregnancy Skin Support, a charity that helps women affected by HG, says it is a health problem that has been neglected for too long.
“I’m very grateful for the dedication of the researchers,” Howden said.
“It was an area of research that people weren’t interested in and it was just a morning thing in pregnant women and it was thought to be normal. Why should we care?”
Morning Skins
Morning skin is usually the first thing that any pregnant woman faces. On waking in the morning, nausea and in some cases vomiting begins.
Dr. Farisa Waqar, a gynecologist in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, says that medication can be used to treat this problem, but ginger helps. The medication may relieve the complaint of vomiting, but it opposes prolonged sleep.
He advises that there is no problem for pregnant women to wake up early in the morning, they should wake up and have breakfast and after that they can rest again if they want. The problem is that to avoid nausea, many women lie down or sleep late and do not eat anything until 12 o’clock in the day, which is not good. Pregnant women should wake up in the morning and have breakfast.
